PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Medical Assisting program prepares students with the necessary clinical and administrative knowledge to become entry-level medical assistants. Students will receive hands-on training and learn how to properly administer injections, take vital signs, record EKGs, implement basic accounting procedures, and understand the fundamentals of patient documentation.
Apart from the core curriculum, learners are trained for the job-seeking process through simulated lab experience, job shadowing and guest speakers from the industry. During the program, accommodations and modifications are provided to high school students based on the IEP/504.After completion of the two-year program, successful candidates will be prepared to seek one or more certifications like the Registered Medical Assistant and National Healthcareer Association- Certified Phlebotomy Technician. Moreover, West-MEC offers industry credential tests at no additional cost. Through the program and certification, students receive medical assistant training from experienced teachers and are well-prepared to enter into the workforce.

Careers that a student could pursue after receiving their certification(s) are: Medical assistant, phlebotomist, chiropractic assistant, insurance biller, coder, lab assistant, health services administrator, home health aide, physician assistant*, family and general practitioner*, registered nurse*, nursing assistant*Work environments include public and private hospitals, out-patient clinics and chiropractor offices. Medical assistants can be both clinical and administrative.
