DRONE TECHNOLOGY

West-MEC's 1-year Drone Technology program prepares students for careers in the rapidly expanding unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) industry by providing a comprehensive foundation in drone operations, aviation safety, flight planning, aerial imaging, data collection, and federal regulations. Students learn the principles of flight, drone system components, weather, airspace classifications, navigation, mission planning, maintenance, and operational procedures while developing the knowledge required to safely and effectively operate unmanned aircraft in both recreational and commercial environments. The program also explores emerging applications of drone technology in industries such as construction, public safety, agriculture, surveying, inspection, filmmaking, and environmental monitoring.

Through hands-on flight experiences, students operate industry-standard drone platforms while developing skills in aerial photography and videography, mapping, data collection, flight automation, and equipment maintenance. Project-based learning provides opportunities to complete real-world flight missions that strengthen technical proficiency, problem-solving, communication, and decision-making skills. Completers have the opportunity to prepare for and earn the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate along with other industry-recognized certifications, providing a competitive advantage for employment or continued education in the growing unmanned aircraft systems industry.

Completers of West-MEC's 1-year Drone Technology program are prepared for a variety of entry-level careers utilizing unmanned aircraft systems across numerous industries. Career opportunities include Commercial Drone Pilot, Remote Pilot, UAS Technician, Aerial Imaging Specialist, Drone Mapping Technician, Surveying Assistant, Infrastructure Inspection Technician, Precision Agriculture Technician, Public Safety Drone Operator, Construction Drone Technician, Environmental Monitoring Technician, and Drone Operations Specialist. As drone technology continues to expand across both public and private sectors, graduates possess highly transferable technical skills that are increasingly sought after by employers.

The program also provides an excellent foundation for students pursuing advanced education or specialized training in aviation, unmanned aircraft systems, engineering, geospatial technology, emergency management, construction management, precision agriculture, cinematography, and aerospace technology. Through hands-on flight training, mission planning, data analysis, and exposure to industry-standard equipment, students graduate with the technical knowledge, operational experience, and professionalism needed to succeed in one of the fastest-growing technology sectors.
