Financial Aid Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do I apply for financial aid?

A. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is an online application at studentaid.gov. Add Western Maricopa Education Center (West-MEC school code: 042472) when you complete it.

Q. Which programs are eligible for financial aid?

A. We have 6 financial aid eligible programs:

• Aviation Maintenance Technology - Airframe & Powerplant (1926 clock hours)
• Dental Assisting (780 clock hours)
• HVAC-R (600 clock hours)
• Pharmacy Technician (600 clock hours)
• Precision Manufacturing (600 clock hours)
• Welding Technology - Plate & Pipe (900 clock hours)

Q. When I fill out a FAFSA it keeps asking for my parent’s information, but I don’t live with my parents. Do I really need to do this?

A. Yes. The Department of Education has determined specific questions to determine if parental information is required. If the FAFSA is asking you for this information, you must enter it to determine your eligibility for federal aid. Q. Why is the school asking for more documents?

A. Some students are selected for a process called verification. The school must request these documents to make sure students get the financial aid they’re eligible to receive. Please visit https://studentaid.gov/apply-for-aid/fafsa/review-and-correct for more information.

Q. Why does my FAFSA say I am eligible for more grants than what West-MEC is telling me?

A. Grant eligibility is based on the amount of clock hours and weeks in a certificate program.  Clock hour programs less than 900 hours will be prorated based on the number of program hours.

Q. What happens after I fill out the FAFSA?

A. It can take up to a week for your FAFSA to be sent to West-MEC. If you’ve already applied to a West-MEC Adult Education program, the Financial Aid Specialist will reach out to discuss your financial aid options. If you haven’t applied yet or if you want to check in, reach out to the Financial Aid Specialist at 623-738-0047.

Q. Can I apply for scholarships?

A. Yes! West-MEC encourages students to apply for all scholarships they qualify for. West-MEC does not have any institutional scholarships for our Adult Education programs, but we work with students and outside organizations to help students fund their programs.
